North Sound, Antigua – Somerset Sabres, principally through the efforts of leg spinner Maximilian Waller and wicketkeeper batsman Jos Buttler, redeemed themselves with a 17 run win over Windward Islands on Day 5 of the Caribbean Twenty20.
After notching up 139 for 4 from 20 overs Somerset restricted Windwards to 122 for 9 from their 20 overs as Waller, who came into the side in place of Peter Trego, took 3 for 16 from four overs.
Buttler cracked a 35 ball 47 with four boundaries and two sixes as he and Craig Meschede (28*) put on 43 for the fourth wicket.
The Windwards did well to contain the Sabres to under 140 after the English side looked to be eyeing in excess of 170 with Buttler playing with unrestrained aggression.
Waller was named Star of the Match for his fine leg spin efforts as his side picked up four points to follow their incredulous last over defeat to Guyana.
Windwards had dominated Combined Campuses & Colleges in their opening game but their batting failed to fire, only four of their batsmen (birthday boy Johnson Charles 36; Garey Mathurin 27; Liam Sebastien 10 and Kenroy Peters 10) getting to double figures as Waller and seamers Alfonso Thomas (2 for 18) and Gemaal Hussain (2 for 19) steered their team to the finishing tape.
I can’t understand the Windwards and West Indies captain Sammy captaincy. He he allows his St. Lucians teammates to bowl early and give up easy runs whie he leaves the Test bowler to bowl late, in this game Pascal only bowl 1 over.
In the batting he put up the order his St. Lucians and leaves the Devon Smith down the order. Sammy bats himself much to early.
What Sammy should be mindful of is that he is not a batsman, his can slug at the end and make some quick runs but not at the top.
Anoter thing why is Sebastian on the team, he has been failing with the bat and ball for over 5 years. Is it because his father is the manager?
