Update on Salary/Wages Payments with regards to Agreement between Gov’t and Unions

Friday, February 22, 2008, St. George’s: As announced by the Accountant General of the Ministry of Finance at a Press Conference last Tuesday February 19th 2008, the agreements between the Public Worker’s Union, Police, Prison Officers and the Government was implemented in January 2008. Consequently, the total salaries and wages, including payments to Pensioners and Contract Officers, increased from EC$16.1M to EC$18.5M, a difference of EC$2.4M per month or EC$28.8M per annum.

Because Police Officers signed their agreement with the Government in October 2000, their salaries were adjusted from November 2007 and back pay for 2006 was paid in December 2007.

A total of EC$1.1M was paid to Police Offices in December 2007 for back pay relating to the year 2006.

Back pay for the year 2006 due to Public Officers, except Teachers, was paid on February 13th this year. This amounted to EC$2.6M. The total back pay to pensioners amounted to EC$1.1M.  A total of EC$3.7M was paid out in February.

Back pay for 2007 is expected to be paid by June 30th 2008. This amount is projected to be $4.8M. (Without a settlement by the Grenada Union of Teachers).

The one off payment due to all Public Officers would be paid on or before August 31st 2008. This is projected to be in the region of EC$2.5M.

All salaries to Public Officers have been adjusted in January to reflect the cumulative increases from 2006 with the exception of Teachers and a few persons represented by the Technical and Allied Worker’s Union.
