SUPERVISOR OF ELECTIONS SEEKS CLARIFICATION ON PRESSING ELECTORAL ISSUE

St. George’s, Grenada (June 12, 2008) Supervisor of Elections Ms. Nadica Mc Intyre wants to know if there has been a violation of election regulations which may affect the date chosen for general elections in Grenada. Reports are that she is seeking legal advice, following concerns raised by the main opposition National Democratic Congress.

The issue surrounds the late publication of notices informing candidates about nomination day requirements.

Section 37 of the Representation of the People’s Act says the nomination notice must be published in the Government Gazette, and in at least one local newspaper, ten days before nomination day.

However, there are indications suggesting that this may not have happened.

GBN understands that the chosen newspaper, which is printed in neighboring Trinidad and Tobago, had its latest edition dated June 07th arriving in Grenada on Monday.

However, on Tuesday morning staff at the paper was inserting a supplement containing the election information back dated to June 5th.

The information was already carried in the Government Gazette of June 04th.Ms. Nadica Mc Intyre was quoted as saying that her office used the particular newspaper to publish the information but was not aware that the paper was not on the news stand by Tuesday. .
