St. George’s, January 24, 2012 – Hundreds of residents of St. Patrick West are expected to attend a meeting on Thursday, January 26, with their parliamentary representative, Hon. Joseph Gilbert.

The MP, who was moved from the Ministry of Works last October and made Environment and Foreign Trade Minister, was dismissed last week by Prime Minister Tillman Thomas.

The dismissal centred on a letter Hon. Gilbert wrote in 2011 as Works Minister and addressed to Harbour Holdings’ company.

“The letter has no binding effect and no legal consequences on the Government of Grenada,’’ Mr. Gilbert said in a statement last Thursday.

“While some may argue that I should not have written the letter, I believe that I, as the then Minister for Physical Development and Works, and all other ministers as well, are duty-bound to ensure that we keep all avenues open that could provide jobs for people.’’

MP Gilbert expressed concern that his “dismissal from Cabinet could virtually deny the people of St. Patrick from benefiting from several projects he had initiated in his constituency.’’

Among the projects, he said, is the acquisition of land in Snell for public use, including the construction of playing field and resource center for the people of Snell Hall, La Fortune, Madeys, and Morne Fendue.

In addition, said Gilbert, there are the land acquisition and construction of lockers for the fishermen of Darvie; expansion of the road network in the Town of Sauteurs; reconstruction of the Welcome Hall Road in Chantimelle; and purchase of land for the  construction of a hard court in Upper Hermitage in St. Patrick East, which is represented in parliament by Prime Minister Thomas.

“We were also working on the Sauteurs Port/Marina project  which is essential for the economic development of the parish, as well as construction of several Kuwait-funded feeder roads in St. Patrick,’’ Mr. Gilbert said.

Thursday’s meeting with MP Gilbert begins 7 p.m., and will be held at the St. Patrick’s Anglican School in Sauteurs.
