Minister David to Discuss Delimitation of Maritime Boundary between Trinidad and Grenada

By Michael Bascombe

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, February 18, 2009 – The delimitation of the maritime boundary between Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago and the opening of a consulate and tourism office in Port-of-Spain are among discussions between the Foreign Ministers of both countries here on Wednesday.

Tourism and Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David is meeting with his Trinidadian counterpart, Paula Gopee-Scoon as a follow-up to discussions when Prime Minister Tillman Thomas met with Prime Minister Patrick Manning during an official visit last August.

Grenada had expressed a willingness to resume negotiations for the delimitation of the maritime boundary between both countries. The last substantive round of formal talks took place in July 1993.

Talks were set to resume in January but scheduling problems have led to delays.

“Grenada is eager to proceed as we believe that a speedy conclusion is in the interest of both parties,” Minister David said.

Former Permanent Secretary in the Grenada Government, Mr Carl Mitchell is accompanying the Minister as a negotiator.

The Minister will also discuss the idea of opening a consulate and tourism office in Port-of-Spain.

The two Ministers are also expected to continue discussions on the inter-island fast ferry service and other areas of cooperation and enhanced connectivity.
