Election countdown

As the countdown draws closer to general elections, the National Democratic Congress is reporting that a new poll has put it ahead of the New National Party. In addition, a former NNP cabinet minister has come out in open support of the NDC. George McGuire, a former NNP Education Minister who also once served as Speaker of the House of Representative, has officially endorsed the re-election bid of Peter David. McGuire appeared at a meeting last Friday in River Road organized by David.
In a passionate plea to voters, he urged them to cast ballots for David and the NDC to ensure the betterment of Grenada.

David, in response, said he was “humbled’’ to be endorsed by McGuire and promised to work hard in the interest of the people as part of an NDC government.

Friday’s River Roads meeting was one of several across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, marking the final weekend before Tuesday’s election. At Saturday’s deliverance concert at Morne Rouge, and Sunday’s colourful and massive rally at Progress Park, all but one NDC candidate was present.

George Prime, the candidate for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, remained in his constituency for what one party official described as “putting the final touches on the campaign to win the seat of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.’’

The NDC campaign end on Sunday closed with a magnificent performance by Jamaican reggae sensation, Beres Hammond.

In interviews this morning, including one with the Caribbean Media Corporation, NDC leader Tillman Thomas thanked the thousands of Grenadians who have supported his party. He reiterated that an NDC administration will govern in the interest of all, and appealed to Grenadians to vote solidly for the NDC.

In the meantime, a newly released poll shows that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is headed for victory in the July 8 general election.

The poll was conducted between June 13 and 20, and involved 200 respondents in each of the 15 constituencies, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Data compiled by the group of Trinidadian pollsters indicates that the National Democratic Congress is leading in 12 constituencies. The NDC is in a dead heat with the New National Party in two constituencies and slightly trailing the NNP in one.

“During the survey, we found strong support for the National Democratic Congress right across Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique,” said the lead researcher, an experienced pollster with a PhD. from the University of Toronto. “NDC support was uniformly strong and significantly solid among certain demographic groups.”
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 per cent.

“I’m not surprised at the poll’s showing,” said NDC leader Tillman Thomas. “We have seen a steady movement towards the NDC since the official election campaign started. But we are going to continue to work hard until the last hour of the campaign to reach every voter to explain our plans and programs for a bright new day for Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique.”
