St. George’s, April 3, 2012 – Only one game will be played this coming Easter weekend in the United Insurance Old Trafford Over-40 Football Competition.
The game, which is on Saturday, April 7, will feature two teams in the so-called “Zone of Death’’ – Honved and St. Paul’s. That match begins 4.30 p.m.
Other teams in the “Zone of Death’’ are Carenage and River Road. The two met on Sunday, April 1, with River Road defeating Carenage 2 – 1 in a last-minute goal from Franklyn Drayton.
Carenage took a first-half lead with a goal from Nickson Barry. But River Road equalized in the second frame through Raphael Charles.
Other winners in competition so far are South Patriots and St. David Golden Boys.
Goals from Adrian Emmanuel and Vallan Sherman earned South Patriots a 2 – 1 victory over South Central Masters. Lydon Bishop was the goal scorer for South Central.
St. David Golden Boys received maximum points after winning by default against North East Masters.
The tournament has been attracting a cross-section of spectators, including families and children.
MP Peter David, who witnessed last weekend’s matches, also donated refreshment to the players.
The tournament, whose objectives include remembering and recognizing outstanding St. George’s footballers of the past, will stage its semifinals on May 5 and 6. The champion game is scheduled for Sunday, May 13.
