KINGSTON, Jamaica – West Indies Players Association (WIPA) president, Wavell Hinds, has spoken out on the Dinesh Ramdin matter. Speaking from Kingston, Hinds expressed disappointment at the West Indies wicketkeeper batsman’s actions immediately after reaching his century during the 3rd and final Test match between England and the West Indies on Sunday at Edgbaston.
“As president of WIPA, I was disappointed to see the reaction of Dinesh to Sir Viv’s criticism of his recent poor form. I have spoken to Dinesh, and I accept his explanation of the incident. I am also heartened that Dinesh has sought to publicly clarify his actions, and has also expressed regret to Sir Viv,”
said Hinds.
Hinds continued,
“Having said that, WIPA wants to make it very clear, that it does not condone behaviour of this nature by any of its members. We are constantly reminding our members of the importance of representing the people of the Caribbean, and also the WICB, in a manner which is in keeping with the spirit of the game, and which will not bring the game into disrepute. Sir Vivian Richards is an icon of West Indies cricket, and a living legend of the sport, and WIPA believes that he should be seen as such by all who represent and support West Indies cricket.”
The WIPA president went on to say that he was hopeful that Ramdin’s century would signal the start of a sustained run of good form for the Trinidadian.
“Dinesh is a talented cricketer who has much to offer the team, and I am confident that with these runs under his belt, and the immediate media frenzy following his “celebration” behind him, that he will play a key role in the expected success of the team for the rest of the tour.”
