KINGSTON, Jamaica – The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) congratulates, Chris Gayle on becoming the West Indian batsman with the most One-Day International (ODI) centuries.
Gayle’s knock of 125 in the second ODI against New Zealand took his him past Brian Lara on the list of West Indian batsmen with the most centuries in the 50-over format. Gayle now leads that list with twenty, surpassing West Indian legend Lara, who retired from international cricket in 2007, ending his career with 19 centuries.
“WIPA joins with all lovers of West Indies cricket in congratulating Chris on this milestone achievement. It is a testament to his dedication to his craft as well as to the cause of West Indies cricket, which has brought him this record,” said WIPA CEO, Michael Hall.
Gayle has been in sensational form in the ODI series against New Zealand amassing 188 runs from two matches thus far at a staggering average of 188. The opening batsman was also named the ‘Player-of-the-Series’ for the Twenty20 Internationals against New Zealand in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The West Indies swept the T20I series 2-0, with Gayle bludgeoning 138 runs which included a top score of 85 not out.
“Although Chris may have unintentionally become a polarizing figure in West Indies cricket, those who know him well are very much aware of his passion for representing the West Indies, and he has certainly demonstrated that since his return to the team. We wish both him and the team continued success,” said Hall.
The West Indies can seal the ODI series against New Zealand on Wednesday when they play the 3rd match at Warner Park, Basseterre, St. Kitts.
