KINGSTON, Jamaica: The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) congratulates Sir Anderson Roberts, Sir Richie Richardson and Sir Curtly Ambrose on the knighthoods which were bestowed upon them on Friday during the first One-Day International between the West Indies and England at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

“On behalf of all WIPA members, we join the rest of the people of the Caribbean in congratulating these three deserving gentlemen, on the occasion of their being knighted by the Government of Antigua & Barbuda,” said Wavell Hinds, President and Chief Executive Officer of WIPA. “Each of them have made massive contributions to our sport, and demonstrated a level of passion and commitment to the game that ought to be emulated by this and future generations of West Indian cricketers to come.”

The trio from Antigua and Barbuda were all instrumental in some way, in propelling the West Indies to the summit of world cricket. Sir Andy was the first Antiguan to play Test cricket for the West Indies when he made his debut against England at Bridgetown, Barbados in 1974. He played 47 Test matches and claimed 202 wickets at an average of 25.61 while also playing 56 limited overs matches and taking 87 wickets at a miserly average of 20.35.

Sir Richie played 86 Test and 224 One-Day International matches. He accumulated 5,949 Test runs at an average of 44.39 and 6,249 ODI runs with an average of 33.41 batting in the middle-order. He succeeded Sir Vivian Richards as captain of the West Indies team and is currently the team’s manager.

Sir Curtly finished his career as one of the greatest fast bowlers to have played the game. He played 98 Test matches, claiming 408 scalps at an average of 20.99 as well as 176 ODIs taking 225 wickets at an average of 24.12.
