St. George’s, February 3, 2012 – Swimmers and others involved in aquatic sporting activities will join the celebration of the 38th anniversary of Grenada’s Independence with weekend activities in the south of the island.
The Grenada Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) will be having a series of races on Saturday, February 4, on Grand Anse Beach.
On Sunday, also on Grand Anse, GASA will be teaming up with the Grenada Triathlon Association in an Independence Exhibition Aquathon.
The Aquathon, which is open to all interested Grenadians, will be held Sunday afternoon. It’s a two-part sporting event in which every athlete swims and then runs along a course on the beach.
The Independence-related events on Grand Anse coincide with the hosting of the 2012 Scotia Work Boat Regatta. The two-day regatta starts Saturday.
Meanwhile, Independence activities sponsored by the National Celebrations Committee continue this weekend with St. Mark and St. Patrick participating in the Prime Minister’s Best Village Competition, which involves judging in the preparation of Oil Down; display of culture and beautification of the environment.
The day-long event in St. Mark is Saturday, and on Sunday, it’s in St. Patrick which is also the venue for the 2012 Independence Calypso Monarch Competition.
The annual Independence Fiesta, St. Andrew Day and the Prime Minister Best Village Competition in the parish, are on Monday, February 6.
The wrap up to the events includes a cultural pageant and paramilitary parade on Tuesday afternoon, February 7, at the National Stadium.
Tuesday – Independence Day – is a public holiday.
Grenada attained Independence from Britain on February 7, 1974, under the Grenada United Labour Party government of former Prime Minister, Sir Eric Matthew Gairy.
