Under 23 netball Team in Nevis‏

The Grenada Under 23 netball team returned to the island on Monday July 6, 2009 after five days of intense competition at the ECCB OECS Under 23 Netball Tournament held in Nevis. Unlike the usual round robin format of the past, this year the teams which represented eight different countries were placed in zones.

Grenada’s opening match was against St. Kitts which they won 53-46. Their next game was against Antigua which they won 73-26. They then faced one of their stronger opponents from last year’s tournament but which was no match for the Spice Girls this year, Dominica which they defeated 74-26. The final game in first round was against the mighty St Vincent & Grenadines which they demolished 65-45.

It was now down to the wire for the Spice Girls with only one game left which would decide their fate of retaining the title as ECCB OECS Under 23 Netball Champions and this game would be against a team they had already defeated in the opening round of the competition; St. Kitts.

At the end of the game the Spice Girls went down 47-50 and St. Kitts were the new champions and for the first time ever could now call themselves the ECCB OECE Under 23 Netball Champions.

Grenada’s Goal Attack Christa Stephens was awarded the MVP Prize while Goal Shooter Lottysha Cato got the award of Most Accurate Shooter.

The team returned to the island Monday evening to a warm reception from family, friends, media personnel as well as Representatives from the Ministry of Sports.
