UNESCO’S Institute for Statistics just concluded a regional training workshop on the 2009 UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics (FCS)
The Workshop took place in Kingston, Jamaica from December 1st – 4th, with delegates from Aruba, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Cuba, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Netherlands Antilles, St. Kitts –Nevis, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico.
The four-day workshop sought to provide both cultural officers and statisticians with the working knowledge of compiling and analyzing cultural statistics through the FCS.
Grenada was represented at the workshop by CEO of the Grenada Cultural Foundation, Dexter Mitchell.
Specific areas covered over the course of the four days included; the Challenges of Measurement, Cultural Employment, Cultural Management Information Systems and Regional Priorities in Cultural Statistics.
The Framework for Cultural Statistics provides a comprehensive template, not only for the collection and analysis of data, but also the varying categories of cultural practitioners who make up the dynamic cultural industries.
While in Jamaica, Mr. Mitchell also met with Ms. Himalchuli Gurung, Programme Specialist for Culture at UNESCO’S Kingston Office. The meeting was very fruitful, with a joint undertaking in the very near future of the documenting of some aspects of Grenada’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Additionally, networking opportunities were established to secure the use of some best practices already established and functioning in neighboring Regional territories.
The Grenada Cultural Foundation continues to work on its mandate, including the creation of an enabling environment for the sustainable growth and development of the cultural industries in Grenada.
