St. George’s, July 25, 2012 – The Carenage Organisation for Recreation and Entertainment (CORE) has received the challenged trophy that will be awarded to the winner of an Over-40 All-Star football game to be held next month at Old Trafford Playing Field in Tanteen, St. George’s.
The trophy is a donation from Hon. Derrick James, Grenada’s Consul General to New York.
James handed over the trophy Wednesday to CORE executive members, Lincoln Toro Depradine and Trevor Joseph.
The Consul General commended the organizers of the football game, noting that he was among many from the Town of St. George who participated in sports at Old Trafford decades ago.
The playing field, relegated to a parking lot and also transformed into a classroom site following the passage of Hurricane Ivan in 2004, was rehabilitated about two years ago.
The rehabilitation was jointly undertaken by the Ministry of Sports, CORE and Hon. Peter David, MP for the Town of St. George.
James has welcomed the return of organized sporting activities at Old Trafford, saying the All-Star football game is also an added attraction to carnival events and the Grenadian Homecoming of the Office of Diaspora Affairs.
The 60-minute game on August 12 – Carnival Sunday – is from 4.30 pm. It will pit a combined team of players from the Diaspora against a squad selected from a recent Old Trafford competition.
Sponsored by United Insurance, the competition – for players 40 years and older – was won by Queen’s Park Rangers that beat St. Paul’s into second place with a goal by Ricky Logan.
Depradine, chairman of CORE, thanked James for donation of the trophy, saying the Carenage group plans on organizing ongoing activities and on working with others in building the community.
He said CORE looks forward, for example, to being a participant with Republic Bank Angel Harps Steel Orchestra in planning and celebrating the band’s 50th anniversary in 2015.
The trophy to be awarded to the All-Star champion is on display at the Recreation Room at the Carenage Sports Complex.
The festive day on August 12 begins at 2 pm with children’s activities, music, cards, dominoes, food and the sale of drinks.
Depradine said donations in cash and kind are being solicited for the Carnival Sunday event.
So far, he said, there have been some small in-kind donations, as well as a cash contribution of $500 from MP David.
