Triple crowns for St. George’s Anglican School

St. George’s, March 9, 2010 – The principal of a St. George’s primary school has said that a “strong and vibrant’’ physical education (PE) programme is one of the main reasons for the school’s recent athletic success.

The St. George’s Anglican School made a clean sweep in the parish primary schools’ track and field championship, winning the march pass and the boys’ and girls’ overall titles. It was the first triple-crown win for a school in the St. George’s Primary Schools’ Sports.

“No other school has ever done that,’’ said a beaming Nigel De Gale, principal of the St. George’s Anglican Senior School. “I am a strong advocate of physical education. I emphasize physical education more than any other subject, and the students look forward to their PE classes. We have a strong and vibrant PE programme.’’

The principal also credited “team effort’’ and his “very cooperative staff’’ for the school’s achievement in the track and field meet.

Under Mr. De Gale’s stewardship, St. George’s Anglican – or “Hindsey School’’ as it is popularly known – was the first primary school to have a computer lab with internet connection, as well as the first primary schools’ steelband.  The principal and staff have also had to borrow drums to set up a drum corps, which played at the 2010 St. George’s Primary Schools’ Sports.

To celebrate the school’s triple victory, students were treated to eats, drinks and music at Camahogne Park on Saturday, March 6. The event, which received sponsorship from members of the business community, was attended by MP Peter David, Minister of Foreign Affairs.  A former “Hindsey’’ student, Mr. David also made a contribution to the students’ celebration.

Mr. De Gale said funds raised from the event will be used to purchase additional computers for the school.

He said the St. Anglican Junior and Senior Schools, together with the Mt. Moritz Anglican School and the Anglican High School, will be participating in the tri-centennial celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of the establishment of the Town of St. George. The schools will hold a joint tri-centennial event on April 22.

In addition, said Mr. De gale, preparatory work is continuing for major activities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the St. George’s Anglican Senior School in 2015.

As a build up to the celebrations, a committee has been established to try and raise funds for the construction of a multi-purpose classroom for the Anglican Senior School. The EC$210,000 project, which the committee wants completed this year, will also include a new a staffroom.

A meeting of the committee will be held Thursday, March 11, 5 p.m., at the Anglican School, Church Street.

“We want as many people, as many old boys and old girls of ‘Hindsey School’ who are interested in maintaining the school’s lasting legacy, to attend the meeting,’’ Mr. De Gale said. “We want everyone to be involved in what we call Project 2015.’’
