St. George’s_ The Ministry of Social Development is continuing efforts to try an eradicate Domestic Violence from the Grenadian society.
The Ministry in collaboration with the Grenada National Organization for Women (GNOW) is currently hosting a two day training exercise on the issue for members of the Royal Grenada Police Force.
The Training began on Thursday 27 November and concluded on Friday 28 November 28, 2008 at the Grenada Trade Center. It is aimed at equipping police officers with the relevant skills to handle instances of domestic violence in a more effective and efficient manner.
The Police are usually the first respondent to instances of domestic violence. As a result of the sensitive nature domestic violence, properly trained law enforcement officers will be better able to handle this “societal menace.”
The training, part of activities to commemorate sixteen days of activism to protest violence against women, was facilitated by Director of the Legal Aid and Counseling Clinic, Jacqueline Sealy- Burke and Domestic Violence Intervention Officer Shane Joseph.
It training session comes on the heals of a round table discussion on Tuesday with various stake holders geared toward increasing cooperation among the agencies that deals with victims and perpetrators of Domestic Violence.
Minister of Social Development Hon GLYNIS Roberts, members of the RGPF, representatives from St. George’s University and Director of Public Prosecution Mr. Christopher Nelson also attended the training session.
