Tourism Minister Welcomes setting up of West Indies Cricket Heritage Centre

Tourism Minister Hon. Glynis Roberts has given a commitment that government will continue to look for ways to augment Grenada’s presence in the Sports-Tourism industry.

“This current government believes in the concept of sports for all as we strive to become a more fit and healthy nation,” the Minister said in remarks at the commissioning of the West Indies Cricket Heritage Centre in Grenada last Friday.

“This venture fits nicely with Government’s mission to create a niche for Grenada through linkages between Sports, Tourism and Culture.”

Describing the setting up of the centre as an historic moment for Grenada and the region, Minister Roberts stated: “ We are not here simply documenting and archiving a sport – West Indies cricket. This is also about a people and a region “

The Tourism Minister, on behalf of Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas, congratulated curator Mr. Phil Daniel for his tireless effort in putting the centre together, and also for choosing Grenada as a fitting location for the venture.

Minister Roberts expressed her conviction that Grenada was chosen not only for its beauty and hospitality, but also in recognition of the many Grenadians who served Team West Indies. She highlighted the contribution of William Henry Mignon in the 1900s, and more recently those of Junior Murray, Rawle Lewis, Andre Fletcher and Devon Smith.

The Tourism Minister is optimistic about the tremendous impact of sports and culture in boosting revenue and foreign exchange.  She is hopeful that the West Indies Cricket Heritage Centre will be a major tourist attraction.

“My fervent hope is that its establishment will not only serve to teach us and educate us but also serve as a motivator of which we can achieve as a people and a region, “Mrs. Roberts said.
