Prime Minister Honourable Tillman Thomas says his government holds fast to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, and is especially concerned with protecting the rights of women.
He made the statement today – the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.
To commemorate the occasion, the Prime Minister delivered a radio address to mark the end of 16 days of activities that was held as part of a campaign in Grenada to end violence against women.
This afternoon, in a ceremony at his office, Mr. Thomas signed the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the human rights of all people.
Representatives of various groups, who attended the ceremony, also signed the declaration. They were Dr. Winston Thomas of the Grenada Human Rights Organisation, Rachel Charles of the Human Rights Desk, Anande Trotman-Joseph of Grenada National Coalition on the Rights of the Child, Nigel Mathlin of GRENCHAP and Elaine Henry-McQueen of the Grenada National Organisation of Women.
Prime Minister, in signing the declaration, reminded the group representatives that he is familiar with human rights, having worked in that field in the early part of his career as a lawyer. He also commended human rights groups which are struggling to defend vulnerable citizens in various countries around the world.
