Inaugural Tillman Thomas Basket Ball Competition Closes with Victory for Flow Ballers

Monday, March 2, 2011; St. George’s, GRENADA – The first Annual Tillman Thomas Basketball Competition organized by the St. Patrick’s Organization for Development (SPOD) as part of the 25th Anniversary Celebration of St. Patrick’s Day Fiesta, came to a close last Friday night at the Sauteurs Hard Court.

At the end of an exciting final game contest between Flow Ballers of Grenville, St. Andrew and Roadside Shooters of Rose Hill, St. Patrick, the visitors were crowned champions of the competition.  Scores at the end of the game were 80-60 in favour of Flow Ballers.

Hon. Tillman Thomas witnessed the deciding game between the finalists after first meeting with team captains, players and game officials.

The Prime Minister, who is also Parliamentary Representative of St. Patrick East, was afforded a court side seat where he looked at the entire game.

After the final game, the PM handed out trophies and cash prizes to the competition winners, Flow Ballers, who received $1500; to second place team Roadside Shooters,  who received $1200; and to third place team Sallee Sixers, who received $700.

The PM also later took time to commend SPOD, the organization’s Chairman Devon Charles, the players, the officials, the spectators who came out to show their support for the sport, and the contributing sponsors — the Grenada Lotteries Authority, Fred Belfon, Shipwreck, Sunshine Store, Best for Less, Grand Bazaar, Kiddies Corner, Satnam, Johnny Budhrannie, Voyager, Klassic Kollection, King’s Souvenir, and Shop & Save.

Commenting on the value of community sporting activities, such as this competition, PM Thomas said, “This was about constructively engaging our youths; about giving them opportunities that cultivate discipline; and about exhibiting talent that can result with youngsters getting to represent Grenada abroad”.

Javon Emery of Flow Ballers was recognized as the Most Valuable Player and received the MVP Trophy.

A total of eight teams from the northern part of Grenada participated in the inaugural Tillman Thomas Basket Ball Competition.
