Thanking the elderly for their contributions to Grenada

St. George’s, October 11, 2011 – Tourism Minister and MP for the Town of St. George, Honourable Peter David, believes that greater recognition must be given to the elderly for their contribution to nation building.

In this respect, he’s beginning a series of visits to citizens 60 years and older living in the Town of St. George. The visits coincide with the observance of October as the “Month of the Elderly.’’

Mr. David says he’ll be thanking the elderly and also trying to meet some of their needs. A dinner is also planned for them.

“That dinner will be coming up later in the month. We’re just kicking things off in October but we’ve decided that it is going to be an ongoing project to identify those elderly persons and to pay recognition to them and help them in whatever way is possible,’’ MP David said.

The aim, he said, is to satisfy some of the needs of the elderly and, “most importantly, to pay tribute to them and to make them know that we, as a younger generation, recognize and appreciate all that they have done for all of us.’’

Hon. David said visits will be made to senior citizens residing in their own homes, as well as those housed in homes for the elderly.

“We’ll visit them wherever they are and do whatever we can to ensure that their life is as comfortable as we possibly can make it,’’ he said.

“There are some people,’’ Mr. David noted, “who are at home and can’t leave. There are some people in the Town of St. George who have not seen many places in the country since they’ve been constructed and developed; for example, the work we’ve done on the forts, in Grand Anse and how the international airport has been developing. We need to take them to those places so that they can see for themselves what is happening in Grenada.’’
