ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA,Wednesday, October 16, 2013 – GIS: The metal framed bridge being built in the Prospect/Duquesne area is nearing completion. This temporary bridge replaces the 1958 built Chapel Bridge which collapsed over a month ago.
Contractor Richardson Cenac spoke to GIS at the site on Tuesday and gave his word that by weekend the bridge will be operational.
“What left to be done now is to finish the wooden deck with another layer of lumber and build a wall to connect the road with bridge and both sides and then pave it with asphalt,”Mr Cenac explained.
“So we’ll be working for the next few days to see if we can get it all done for Saturday”.
The Senior Engineer in the Ministry of Works, John St Louis said there have been some delays caused by the weather as well as some technical difficulties, but he is pleased with progress made in building the bridge. The temporary bridge when completed is expected to accommodate up to 20 tons.
A permanent bridge is also earmarked for the area under the St Patrick’s Bridges and Roads Project.
However, government says the metal frame bridge is a temporary measure to bring relief to residents and others who have been inconvenienced as a result of the collapse of the Chapel Bridge between prospect in St Patrick and Duquesne in St Mark.
