Athens, Greece, April 6, 2011 – Veteran Grenadian trade unionist, Senator the Hon. Chester Humphrey, is currently in Athens, Greece, attending the 16th World Congress of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU).
Sen. Humphrey is President General of the militant Technical & Allied Workers’ Union (TAWU) of Grenada, and also General Secretary of the Caribbean Congress of Labour.
The Congress began today, Wednesday, with an address by the President of the Greek Parliament, as well as the Mayor of Athens.
Sen. Humphrey is representing TAWU which became affiliated to the WFTU last year. This is the first World Congress that the union is attending.
The Congress brings together over 800 delegates from 111 countries.
“The meeting comes against the backdrop of the prolonged global economic and financial crisis with millions of workers unemployed, and with millions also having lost their homes,’’ Sen. Humphrey said.
The Congress is being held under the theme, “Struggle for Contemporary Needs Against Capitalist Barbarism For A World Without Exploitation.’’
