St. George’s, June 29, 2010 – The National Democratic Congress empathises with the residents of St. Andrew, particularly those who lost merchandise in the fire that occurred at the Grenville Vendors’ Market on Sunday.
“We understand the predicament of the vendors and are pleased with the swift action being taken by Government Ministers, MP Patrick Simmons and MP Sylvester Quarless, to try and assist the affected vendors,’’ said NDC Public Relations Officer, Senator Arley Gill.
The fire also damaged the District Revenue Office (DRO) in Grenville and some mail at the Grenada Postal Corporation office became water-soaked in efforts to put out the fire.
The DRO and the fire-affected mall were visited on Monday by several top Government ministers and NDC officials, including Finance Minister and Deputy Party Leader, Nazim Burke.
The DRO has been temporarily relocated to upstairs the Agricultural Office on Seaton James Street, and payment of Public Assistance, pension and salaries will be made from the new office site from Tuesday, June 29.
“We empathise with all the people affected this unfortunate fire and commend the Ministry of Finance for taking such quick alternative measures,’’ Sen. Gill said. “We now await the completion of police investigation into the cause of the fire. We are also heartened that Government is vigorously pursuing the Greater Grenville Project that will provide better facilities and services for the people of St. Andrew, including our merchants, vendors and bus operators.’’
Sen. Gill and other members of the NDC Government will be visiting various communities across the nation on Tuesday, June 29, to join the celebration of Fisherman’s Birthday.
The day, which has a Christian background, is also known as the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, two fishermen who were the closest disciples of Christ.
Tuesday’s celebration will include church services, the blessing of boats and aquatic and cultural activities. Some of the biggest attractions will be in the Parish of St. John, Grenada’s main fishing centre.
“Our Party extends best wishes to all our fisher folks on Fisherman’s Birthday,’’ Sen. Gill said. “I also take this opportunity to wish the people of St. John continued success in the ongoing observance of Celebrate St. John’s, which runs until July 11.’’
