St. George’s, April 18, 2011 – Residents of the Carenage in St. George’s will host two days of family activities in Tanteen over the Easter weekend.
Activities begin on Sunday, April 24, 4 p.m., with several steelbands participating in a Pan Jamboree. It’s being organised by defending Bomb Tune Competition champions, Republic Bank Angel Harps Steel Orchestra.
The Jamboree, scheduled for the Tanteen Netball Court, will include the sale of food and drinks, and numerous children’s games.
Additional fun activities – primarily cricket and small-goal football – will be held on April 25 as part of a Sports’ Day being spearheaded by the Carenage Organisation for Recreation and Entertainment (CORE).
The Easter Monday Sports’ Day commences 10 a.m., and will be held at Old Trafford Playing Field.
Just this past weekend, grading and other major work began on restoring Old Trafford which had been used for classroom studies and as a vehicular parking lot for more than six years.
MP for the Town of St. George, Peter David; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Veda Bruno-Victor; Sports Coordinator in the Ministry, Conrad Francis; and CORE representatives were present when employees of the Ministry of Works started grading Old Trafford last Saturday.
The ministry employees promised that when work is completed, Old Trafford will be “better than before,’’ with an oval shape to allow the run-off of water.
MP David, who is also Minister of Tourism, says the rehabilitation of Old Trafford is in keeping with a commitment by government ministers to deliver on pledges made when the National Democratic Congress was elected to office in 2008.
“It’s not just in the Town of St. George but it’s also true of every constituency. All ministers are working hard to meet the needs of their constituents,’’ he said.
In the case of the Town of St. George, Mr. David said preparations are moving ahead for relocating Market Square vendors and rebuilding the facility by the start of the next cruise ship season.
Other projects for the city include upgrading the small Wembley play ground in River Road, as well as the lighting of the playing field and the opening of a community centre in the area.
There are also plans for enhancing the pan house facilities of Republic Bank Angel Harps, Coyaba New Dimensions and Suzuki Pan Wizards, Mr. David said..
