St. Vincent Retains WI Cricket Championship

St George’s Grenada – St Vincent and the Grenadines retained the Windwards Islands Senior Championship after defeating Dominica by six wickets in the final round of matches. Chasing 100 runs for victory after tea at La Sagesse, the Vincentians coasted to 102-4, to record their second outright win of the competition. SVG had earlier restricted Dominica to 162 all out in their second innings, to set up the victory.

The Vincentians lost their two openers Atticus Browne and Salvan Browne without scoring, but Hyron Shallow and Sunil Ambris revived their team’s hopes with responsible knocks. Shallow top scored with 44 which included four boundaries and two sixes while Ambris struck five fours in his 43. Resuming from an overnight 239-9 in their first innings, SVG were 255 all out with opener Articus Browne getting a top score of 53.

Faced with a first innings deficit of 63, Tyrone Theophille then hammered an aggressive 94 as Dominica sought to regain control of the match. He slammed six fours and four sixes and shared in a 59-run opening stand with Samuel Mitchell who made 22. Despite Theophille’s efforts, Dominica were all out just before tea for 162, with leg-spinner Keron Cottoy grabbing 4-52 and left-arm pacer Delorn Johnson, 2-28.
