St. George’s, July 24, 2012 – Grenadians in all the island’s parishes were given a glimpse of carnival 2012 at an event jointly staged by the Spicemas Corporation (SMC) and several of its private sector partners.
Last Saturday’s event, a motorcade that featured some of the participants of carnival, began at the Mt. Hartman headquarters of LIME, platinum sponsor of Spicemas 2012. The telecom giant also used the opportunity to offer specials to LIME subscribers.
The motorcade, which included soca artistes, as well as revellers in Fancy Mas and Traditional Mas costumes, travelled from Mt. Hartman in St. George’s, to the west coast, up to St. Patrick in the north and across to St. Andrew, before climaxing in St. David.
Among those who were part of the official carnival contingent were the beauties that would grace the National Stadium stage on Majestic Thursday, August 9, in the Queen competition.
As they journeyed through the parishes, the queen contestants were allowed to get up close and interact with villagers.
Some LIME-endorsed artistes also entertained crowds at various points with live performances.
Commenting on the motorcade, SMC Chief Executive Officer, Jennifer Woodroffe, said: “It was quite a success. We wanted to give everyone a taste of Spicemas and we can say – mission accomplished.”
The motorcade preceded the start of semifinal judging in carnival competitions, such as the Groovy Soca Monarch.
Judging for Groovy Soca Monarch semifinalists is Thursday, July 26, at Garfield’s Summer Lime on Kirani James Boulevard.
The LIME Soca Monarch semifinal is July 27 at Victoria Park, Grenville; and the Traditional Mas Exhibition and Competition is July 28 in Victoria, St. Mark.
The action returns to Victoria Park on Sunday, July 29, for another LIME-sponsored activity – the Melody/Pappitette Calypso semis.
General Manager LIME, Angus Steele, noted that “there must be a build up to the big week of judging. The motorcade is one of the means to build the carnival momentum and it achieved its objectives.”
Apart from LIME, SMC’s other corporate partners in the motorcade included Coke and Etang Water of the Grenada Bottling Company; Grenada Breweries Ltd; National Lotteries Authority; and Westerhall Rum.
