June 17, 2013 – Labour Representative in the Senate, Ray Roberts has called on the Minister responsible for the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) Dr. Clarice Modeste-Curwen to reconsider her choice as Chairman of the Nation’s largest Financial Institution.
Addressing the Senate, the Trade Unionist said the academic ability of the New Chairman is not being questioned what is being challenge is one of ethics. He noted that the new Chairman is a close family member of a significant shareholder of a company which is in business with the National Insurance Scheme (NIS.)
He named the company as Indigenous Investors which he claimed has borrowed millions from the NIS, investing in real estate among others and it is public knowledge that the company has defaulted on its payment to the NIS.
Senator Roberts said it sends the wrong message to have someone like the new chairman managing the workers’ pension money and impressed upon the chairman to withdraw from the position.
Senator Roberts said the family relationship between NIS chairman and investor takes away from the integrity of the state institution.
