St. George’s, November 4, 2011 – Senator Arley Gill, the Minister with responsibility for Culture, has expressed deep sadness at the passing of Anthony “Jericho’’ Greenidge, saying the former broadcaster, calypsonian, athlete and Master of Ceremony has left an “indelible mark’’ on the Grenadian cultural and media landscape.
Greenidge, who was born and raised in the Four Roads’ area of St. George’s, died Thursday in New York where he was receiving medical treatment.
As news of his death was made public, there was an outpouring of tribute from Grenadians at home and abroad to the former WEEFM announcer whose signature radio programming included the “Informal News.’’
Greenidge, who also called himself “De Duke,’’ was also a former secondary school and national athlete, and a staple of the cultural community. He not only sang calypso but was also a commentator at carnival calypso competitions, and served as the MC for panorama and children’s carnival.
“It is not a cliché to say that there will never be another Jericho,’’ said Sen. Gill, Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture.
“In the pantheon of Grenadian culture,’’ Sen. Gill said, “Jericho has left an indelible mark. He was calypsonian and extempore artiste; calypso commentator and critic; Master of Ceremony; and a Parrandero who entertained us as a member of Men from the Mainland.’’
According to Sen. Gill, “the nation’s media and cultural communities have lost a giant. May Jericho rest in peace. I’m sure I speak on behalf of many in saying that he will be sorely missed, and in expressing heartfelt condolences to all his family members, including his children.’’
