Scholar tops Master’s programmme at university

St. George’s, December 6, 2011 – Educator and calypsonian, Findlay Jeffrey, plans on pursuing further education following his successful graduation from the University of Manchester in England.

The multiple-time Grenada Calypso Monarch, who is better known as Scholar, graduated with distinction in his one-year Master’s program in Human Resource Management/International Development.

He was the top student in his class and has been invited to deliver the valedictory address at this month’s university graduation ceremony, where he is also to receive an award.

“The programme of studies was rigorous but I enjoyed it,’’ Jeffrey said. “My goal now is to pursue a PhD.’’

The 41-year-old Chantimelle resident, who represented Grenada at the 2006 CARIFESTA Calypso Monarch Competition, was appointed a Grenada Cultural Ambassador by the Ministry of Culture earlier this year.

“I want to congratulate Scholar for graduating at the top of his class,’’ said Senator Arley Gill, Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture.

“Scholar has distinguished himself as a teacher at McDonalds’s College and as a performing artiste. He has now done so also as a student at the University of Manchester. He is definitely a true Grenadian ambassador.’’

Scholar, who debut as a calypsonian in 1993 and performed at last weekend’s Camerhogne Festival in Sauteurs, missed the 2011 carnival season because he was away finishing his studies in England. He hopes to return to local competition at Spicemas 2012.

His Commonwealth scholarship to the University of Manchester was negotiated through the Grenada Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.

“I, too, congratulate Scholar on his success in his Master’s programme,’’ Said Senator Franka Alexis-Bernadine, Minister of Education and Human Resource Development. “Scholar is a model of tenacity, perseverance and professionalism and fine example of someone who recognizes the value of higher education.’’

Sen. Alexis-Bernadine pledged that the Scholarship Desk in the Ministry of Education “will remain steadfast in finding opportunities for college and university studies for all nationals interested in an education at the tertiary level.’’
