Beausejour, Carriacou, January 14th, 2014- Acting Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Lawrence Sacks are among dignitaries expected on the 400 acres island of Petite Martinique; for the completion ceremony for Phase 1 of the Sanchez Revetment Project.
The project which commenced in September 2013 by contracting firm Virgin Beach Ltd is in its final stage and has seen the rehabilitation and restoration of the lone playing field on the island, which has been negatively affected by coastal erosion.
It was made possible by the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) in partnership with USAID, who implemented the Rallying the Region to Action on Climate Change project and supported the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs in its quest to address climate change issues.
According to contractor Edwin DeCaul, the project has had many positive impacts on the island which include the re-development of an area which can host different activities and the preparation of a new housing site.
The completion ceremony is scheduled for Thursday January 23rd, 2014 and will include cultural presentations. Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Hon. Elvin Nimrod will deliver brief remarks at the ceremony.
Other dignitaries expected to be present include US Charge d’ Affaires Louis Crishock and Director of the Social and Sustainable Development Division OECS Secretariat Bentley Browne.
The public is hereby invited to join in this important and significant exercise.
