Safer and better flow of traffic

St. George’s, November 5, 2009 – Grenadians can expect a safer and better flow of traffic on a section of the western side of the island within a few months.

For the moment, however, Works Minister Hon. Joseph Gilbert is appealing for motorists’ patience as work continues in the Brizan/Perseverance area of the Western Main Road.

The Disaster Mitigation and Restoration Rockfall and Landslip Project has caused delays in traffic during the weekdays. On the weekends, the Brizan/Perseverance area is completely closed down.  This weekend, it will be closed from 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, to 10 p.m. on Sunday, November 8.

Hon. Gilbert, who is also Minister of Physical Development and Public Utilities, explained the importance of the road work, promising that it will be completed in the first quarter of the New Year.

“The road is now being widened by blasting and cutting the rock face to align the roadway further inland and away from the unstable edge which over hangs the sea below,’’ the minister said. “We will be experiencing some challenges with respect to the flow of traffic as we proceed with this work, which is expected to be completed sometime in February 2010.’’

Hon. Gilbert, in a word to commuters using the Western Main Road, said: “I want to thank the many motorists, who have to ply that area, for the high degree of tolerance and cooperation that they have exhibited with respect to the delays and closures from time to time.’’
