Roberts’ endorsement said to be subject of meeting of PM’s group

St. George’s, April 7, 2012 – There is growing speculation that attempts will be made by a section of the National Democratic Congress to reverse the decision made last week to endorse Labour Minister, Glynis Roberts, as the NDC candidate for South St. George in the next general election.

A meeting of the St. George South Constituency Branch passed a resolution – 57 votes to 8 – to endorse Mrs. Roberts as the candidates for the polls that are due by next year. She won the seat in 2003 and 2008.

However, since the Constituency Branch meeting on April 4, comments from NDC insiders – some of which have been reported in the media – are giving rise to suggestions that efforts are underway to reverse the Roberts’ choice of candidacy.

One weekly newspaper ran an article alleging that the endorsement of some NDC candidates have been done at what it described as “questionable meetings.’’

On Saturday morning, NDC Leader and Prime Minister, Hon. Tillman Thomas, was meeting with a group that some are calling the “Fight the Leftists Movement’’ (FTLM).

It is believed that the candidacy endorsement of Roberts, as well as another expected this coming week of St. Patrick West MP, Joseph Gilbert, was one of the topics being discussed at today’s meeting at the home of a government senator.

Among those joining the Prime Minister at Saturday’s FTLM meeting were Education Minister Sen. Franka Bernardine, Health Minister Ann Peters, Works Minister Dennoth Modeste, and Information Minister Glen Noel.

Apart from Roberts, NDC Constituency Branches have endorsed Modeste as the election candidate for St. Mark; Sen. George Prime for Carriacou and Petite Martinique; and Dr. George Vincent for St. John.

The names of the proposed candidates have to be submitted to the NDC’s National Executive for ratification and final approval.
