Resolutions and assessment at NDC Constituency Branch retreat

St. George’s, August 23, 2011 – Works Minister and MP for St. Patrick West, the Hon. Joseph Gilbert, has once again been reassured that he has the full backing of members of his constituency.

The reassurance was given Sunday when scores of hardcore, patriotic activists of the NDC St. Patrick West constituency met in retreat.

In one of two resolutions adopted at the retreat, members of the St. Patrick West Constituency Branch of the National Democratic Congress expressed “total confidence’’ in Minister Gilbert, and committed “full support for his astute political leadership and his continued tenure as MP for St. Patrick West.’’

The second resolution calls on government to exercise “prudence’’ in treating with the issue of certain government-contracted workers who volunteer to hold office in their political party.

Sunday’s retreat was attended by several senior NDC officials including newly elected Chairman, Kenrick Fullerton, General Secretary Peter David, and two Assistant General Secretaries.

The retreat, according to the General Secretary David, “is the first in a series that will be held in every single constituency over the next few weeks.’’

MP Gilbert described the retreat as “an extremely successful event that met all expectations.’’ He added that “the stage is now set for a heightened level of activity in the constituency – politically and otherwise.’’

In group discussions, participants analyzed and strategized on issues pertinent to the organizational work of the NDC.

They also assessed, and made recommendations, on the extent to which government has delivered on the 2008 programmatic platform of the St. Patrick West constituency.

MP Gilbert, a civil engineer and also Minister of Physical Development and Public Utilities, used the opportunity to provide an update on the progress of several major infrastructure projects that he is spearheading in St. Patrick.

The projects include the St. Patrick Road Network Upgrade funded by the Caribbean Development Bank; the Sauteurs Town Road Network expansion; the Carib’s Leap enhancement; and the Centre for the Performing Arts.

The Works Minister also reported on plans for the Sauteurs Police Station Complex; the Darvie Fishermen’s Lockers and Beach Access Road; and the Snell Hall Playing Field and Resource Center funded by the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
