Reigning Miss Grenada USA Presents Students With Scholarship Awards

Miss Grenada USA, Reva Lewis, has returned to Grenada for the second time during her reign. She has managed to keep busy participating in a number of activities, including the presentation of two scholarship awards.

Jerrel Lewis of South St. George’s Government School  and Vashti Gibson of St. George’s Methodist School the winner and runner up of the 2011 Miss Grenada USA Scholarship Essay Competition. Reva solicited public primary schools throughout the parish of St. George scouting student participants with financial need to continue their education at a higher institution. Students wrote letters and essays to Miss Lewis in a biographical format, explaining how this scholarship will benefit their future. A committee then decided based on the many entries in the challenging competition, upon a winner and a runner up. Funds were raised through various fundraising initiatives and through sponsor outreach.

Jerrel will be attending Presentation Brothers College, also known as PBC, and Vashti Gibson will be attending Beacon High School, this upcoming school year.

Lewis plans to continue the essay competition throughout the island, selecting students from a different parish each year, hoping for the scholarship to develop bigger and better. “Education is the base of our society, and I believe in strengthening the youth by any means necessary. Financial strain is a major set back and I plan to help as many students as I can, now and beyond my reign.”

Lewis took part in the Grenada Diaspora Founding Conference, as a member of the Grenadian American Young Womens Association last week, which turned out to be a success, being the youngest participant at the conference. She has also made appearances at the National Carnival Queen Show, and has been present at all of the Carnival activities as a photojournalist representing the island for international Caribbean website, TriniJungleJuice.com.

Lewis plans to make another visit before the year is over to continue to enjoy what her nation has to offer, as well as to make her contribution as a partner in nation building.
