Political Leader of the National Democratic Congress, Senator V. Nazim Burke, travelled to the United States today Wednesday, at the invitation of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) to participate in a high- level global workshop on Financial Policy Innovation and Sustainable Development.
In January 2014, the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) initiated an Inquiry into the Design of a Sustainable Financial System to advance options that would deliver a step change in the financial system’s effectiveness in mobilizing capital towards a green and inclusive economy.
The Inquiry is expected to publish its final report in 2015.The UNEP staff has put together an initial mapping of the existing national and international efforts to align the rules that govern the international finance existing and emerging arrangements and contribute to the final design of a sustainable financial system.
The three- day workshop brings together thirty (30) global policymakers, practitioners and international experts to exchange experiences and build together a framework for promoting effectiveness and impact of Green Financial Policy Innovation.
Among the high- level special invitees attending the workshop are experts from the US Department of Treasury; the Central Banks of China, the United Kingdom and Brazil; the International Financial Corporation (IFC- the private sector arm of the World Bank); and various research institutes and think- tanks of international repute on sustainable development, climate change, renewable energy and International Finance.
