Tuesday 3rd July, 2018: Political Leader of the New National Party (NNP), Dr. Keith Mitchell has stated that not only will his administration pay the promised increase to pensioners as of the end of July but has made a further promise of increases once the fiscal space allows. Prime Minister Mitchell was delivering the keynote address at the NNP’s General Council Meeting in Hermitage St. Patrick on the weekend.
PM Mitchell also made the major announcement of Gratuity Payments to persons affected by the Pensions Disqualification Act of 1983 for the period 1983 to 1985 by the end of July as well. Dr. Mitchell congratulated the hard working team of the Trade Union movement as well as staff at the Ministry of Finance for their bringing these issue to this point of achievement.
The New National Party Administration took the decision not to pursue an appeal to the successful Hermilyn Armstrong Case brought against Government previously, when it returned to office in 2013. This decision opened the door to a faster resolution to the issue of Pensions and gratuities for Public Workers entering the system after the Pensions Disqualification Act of 1983. The Government together with the Trade Unions have been working steadfastly to ensure that these workers are fairly treated.
The Prime Minister also announced that the team is working to quickly address the group of workers after the year 1985 who are also seeking their gratuities and other benefits.
