PM highlights government’s successes and NDC core values

St. George’s, March 27, 2011 – Political Leader of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Tillman Thomas, is confident his party could win a second straight general election.

Mr. Thomas, who is also Grenada’s Prime Minister, told NDC members and supporters Sunday that success at the polls would require organization and commitment at the party level, and refocusing on the party’s core values.

“We must live up to the expectations of the core values of the National Democratic Congress. The NDC is the party that upholds the values and principles that Grenadians want to see,’’ Hon. Thomas said in a leadership address at Sunday’s NDC General Council at the Boca Secondary School. The theme of the meeting was, “Determined to Build a Better Grenada.’’

The General Council is a governing body of the NDC and it’s subject only to the Party’s Convention, which will be held July 3.

Prior to the address by Prime Minister Thomas – MP for St. Patrick East – there were reports from Treasurer Bernard Isaac and General Secretary Peter David; a message from NDC Toronto delivered by the group’s visiting Chairman Paul George; and a statement from the Montreal Support Group that was read by Vincent Roberts, Public Relations Officer of the National Democratic Congress.

The meeting, presided over by NDC Chairman Glen Noel, also included a lively question and answer session involving the rank and file and the party’s leadership; and the presentation of resolutions and recommendations that is expected to lead to greater activism within the National Democratic Congress.

Among the resolutions were several emanating from workshops that discussed topics such as “Party/Government Relations;’’ “Party Building;’’ “Public Relations & Branding;’’ “Fundraising;’’ “Party Discipline;’’ and “Public Engagement.’’

Mr. Thomas said there will be differences on issues in the party, but added that these will have to be dealt with to ensure “NDC values prevail.’’

He urged the building of a “well-grounded organization’’ in which new people are brought into the party, and encouraged leading members to go out, talk to people and engage them.

Hon. Thomas also highlighted the successes of the NDC administration that was elected to office with an 11 – 4 margin at general elections on July 8, 2008.

Government’s achievements have included the establishment of structures for good governance and the upholding of freedom of the press and freedom of expression, he noted.

Prime Minister Thomas said that since 2008, Grenada had also made tremendous strides in the areas of agriculture, agri-business, education, and health and dental care.

“Our achievement in government is something we can boast about,’’ The NDC Leader and Prime Minister said.

Mr. Thomas also took pride in the management of the economy, despite the constraints of the global economic crisis.

“Everybody knows Grenada has been managed properly economically,’’ he said. “Right now, we’re on the road to growth.’’
