Playing field back to competitive sporting standard

St. George’s, December 14, 2011 – MP for the Town of St. George, Hon. Peter David, is satisfied that the hardwork of rehabilitating Old Trafford Playing Field in Tanteen is beginning to pay dividends.

He made the comments Wednesday afternoon as he witnessed a football game at Old Trafford involving students of T.A. Marryshow Community College.

“The plan all along was to get Old Trafford back to a standard for competitive sporting activities. The work that was put in to rehabilitate and upgrade the field is beginning to pay dividends with regular action, such as football and cricket, being played at Old Trafford,’’ said MP David, who is also Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture.

The Carenage Organisation for Recreation and Entertainment (CORE) lobbied Mr. David and the Ministry of Sports for the removal of classrooms that were set up at Old Trafford for almost seven years from 2004, and to have the field returned to its original use for sporting events.

CORE has since been able to solicit a donation of white paint from Sissons to mark the goal line and other playing areas of the football field.

The organisation is also seeking assistance for the fencing of Old Trafford, as well as for installing change-rooms, covering the bleachers and building additional seats for spectators.
