St. George’s, June 8, 2012 – An intense period of activities is expected at the Old Trafford Playing Field in Tanteen over the next two months, starting later this month.
Old Trafford, rehabilitated and refurbished last year, was the venue of a recently completed football championship for players 40 years and older.
The United Insurance-sponsored competition was won by Queen’s Park Rangers.
Members of the Caranege Organization for Recreation and Entertainment (CORE) are now planning on bringing together the best players of the competition for an all-star game.
The idea, according to CORE, is to have the players compete with Grenadian footballers living in New York and other parts of the Diaspora who will be visiting for Spicemas 2012. The two teams will battle for a challenge trophy.
The all-star football game will be the highlight of program of activities scheduled for Carnival Sunday, August 12.
However, there are some events that have been scheduled for this month at Old Trafford, with others planned for July.
Among evens this month is a June 16 Family Fun Day organized by the Media Workers Association of Grenada.
Discussions are also being held for holding a month-end over-40 football fete match between South Patriots and Carenage. South Patriots were third placed finishers in the United Insurance tournament.
In the meantime, work continues on enhancing Old Trafford. The National Lotteries Authority (NLA) is pursuing a proposal to fence the playing field.
As part of the initial component of the proposal, work has been completed on fixing the poles on which new protective wire mesh would be attached on the side of the field closest to the Tanteen main road.
