People earnestly want to help Haiti, says MP David

St. George’s, January 15, 2010 – A massive drive for cash and in-kind donations for the people of earthquake-stricken Haiti has been mounted by residents of the Town of St. George.

A meeting on the Haitian crisis convened Thursday afternoon by Hon. Peter David, MP for the Town of St. George, brought together about 50 people at the old Wesley Hall School on Lucas Street, St. George’s.

“It was really heart-warming to see the quick response of people who have shown that they earnestly want to help our Haitian Brothers and Sisters,’’ said Mr. David, who is also Foreign Minister in the National Democratic Congress government led by Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas.

MP David said there were some “wonderful suggestions at the meeting on how we can assist Haiti, and it was decided that we should take certain action immediately.’’

The immediate steps include the collection of items such as milk, peas, beans, peanut butter, batteries, flashlights, cups, plates, tin openers, cooking utensils, first-aid items, sheet, pampers and toiletries.

Community activist Peggy Nestfield, a member of the steering committee spearheading the drive, said that clothes are also needed.

However, she urges people to make sure the clothes are washed and sorted before being donated.

Several collection points have been identified to receive donations, including downstairs the old Wesley Hall School, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., as well as the old Coca Cola Factory in Tempe.

Food collection points are the Food Fair Supermarkets in Grand Anse and on the Carenage; Andall’s in the Town of St. George and at Parade; and Foodland on Lagoon Road and in the Town of St. George.

Persons wishing to make cash donations can do so at the Red Cross and at branches of the Republic Bank, using account number 91207085. Cash donations are also being accepted at all branches of the Grenada Co-operative Bank, where the account number is 121003657.

Ms. Nestfield said coordinating committee members plan to walk the streets of communities in the Town of St. George to talk to people about the Haitian situation, and to seek additional donations.

“We’ll also identify key people in the communities who will be designated as having authority to collect donations for the Haitian cause,’’ she said.
