BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – A devastating burst from discarded West Indies fast bowler Nelon Pascal left Barbados on the ropes on the opening day of their Regional Four-Day contest against leaders Windward Islands here Saturday.

Responding to the a paltry 184 all out by the visitors in the fifth round game, Barbados crashed to 33 for five as Pascal grabbed three for 15 in a quick spell at Kensington Oval.

Heading into Sunday’s second day, Barbados are still 151 run adrift of securing first innings lead.

Opting to bat first, the Windwards were led by the tournament leading scorer Devon Smith who stroked 40 while Andre Fletcher chipped in with 38 and Kenroy Peters, an unbeaten 25 down the order.

Combative left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn picked up four for 50 while rookie off-spinner Ashley Nurse finished with four for 63.

Smith and Tyrone Theophile (11) gave the Windwards another solid start of 51 before things fell apart.

The left-handed Smith stroked eight fours in a 69-ball knock but was one of three wickets to fall for five runs as the Windwards slipped to 56 for three.

Wickets fell steadily as the visitors declined to 105 for six and it took two fighting partnerships to boost the total.

Fletcher, who batted 147 minutes and 138 balls and struck four boundaries, put on 36 for the seventh wicket with Shane Shillingford, whose 24 contained three fours and a six.

When Fletcher edged a booming drive to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich off the second ball of seamer Kevin Stoute’s first spell and Garey Mathurin (2) and Shillingford followed quickly afterward, Peters and Pascal (9), added a precious 29 from 27 deliveries for the final wicket in a breezy stand.

In reply, Barbados lost Rashidi Boucher without scoring in the third over, lbw to Pascal playing across the line with the score on four.

Captain Kirk Edwards then drove the final delivery of Pascal’s next over to Mathurin at mid on before debutant 19-year-old Shai Hope was given out caught at the wicket without scoring, hooking at left-arm pacer Peters at eight for three.

Left-handed Jonathan Carter picked out Mathurin at mid-off with Pascal to fall for five and Barbados’ day was summed up when opener Kraigg Brathwaite was run out for eight in a horrible mix up with Stoute, who was unbeaten on 16 at the end.
