St. George’s, April 4, 2012 – Labour Minister Glynis Roberts, the two-time MP for St. George South, wants members and supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to work together to better serve the needy in the society.
“I want us to focus on working together to help those in need. Fighting among ourselves won’t help,’’ MP Roberts said Wednesday evening at a South St. George Constituency Branch meeting at the Grand Anse R.C. School.
A crowded and noisy classroom of St. George South constituents, officials of the national executive of the NDC, and party members from the Town of St. George and other constituencies, attended the meeting.
The major outcome was the passage of a resolution endorsing Mrs. Roberts as the candidate for the next general election that is due by next year. The resolution was passed by a vote of 57 to 8.
Mrs. Roberts’ name will now be submitted to the NDC’s national executive, which makes the final decision on who represents the party as candidates in general elections.
MP Roberts, who left the meeting early, has been juggling her political work with caring for her ill husband.
She told the meeting she is not looking for sympathy but is grateful to the people who have been supporting and praying for her and her family.
“It’s not easy for us,’’ said Mrs. Roberts, adding that the experience has convinced her that there are more good people than bad ones in the world.
Mrs. Roberts, who won her seat in 2003 and 2008, said she welcomes not only the political support of constituents but also their criticism that “guides you and keep you on track.’’
She added that it is not in her personality to engage in hostility. “I came into politics as a woman with integrity and will leave with integrity,’’ she said.
NDC General Secretary Peter David, in closing remarks, appealed for ongoing prayers and support for Roberts and Ingrid Rush, a longtime NDC member who is also caring for a critically ill relative.
MP David also expressed hope that when he seeks the endorsement as the candidate for the Town of St. George in the upcoming national polls, the meeting in the city will be attended by party members from other constituencies in a show of support, similar to that displayed for Mrs. Roberts on Wednesday.
