St. George’s, June 7, 2010 (GIS) – Junior Information Minister, Sen. Arley Gill, has described Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Mitchell as “pathological,’’ and an attention-seeker.
Sen. Gill pointed to remarks the Opposition Leader made on a public platform in which false allegations were made against Grenada and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
Dr. Mitchell claimed that under a bilateral agreement, accommodation is provided in each host country for their respective ambassadors and that Grenada’s top diplomat in Venezuela, Ambassador George MacLeish, is paid a housing allowance.
Both the Grenada Ministry of Information, through Senator Gill, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have dismissed the opposition charges.
“We are unaware of any agreement between Grenada and the Venezuelan Republic for the host country to provide accommodation for the respective ambassadors,’’ a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.
“The Government of Grenada does not provide any accommodation to the Venezuelan Ambassador to Grenada, nor does Venezuela provide accommodation to Grenada’s Ambassador in Caracas.’’
Sen. Gill referred to the Opposition Leader as a “leopard unable to change its spots,’’ noting that it was the same “web of lies’’ that has discredited Dr. Mitchell in the eyes of a majority of Grenadians.
“He is a pathological prevaricator and an attention-seeker, whose main preoccupation, now that he no longer holds the position of Prime Minister, is the spreading of discord and confusion in the nation, to the point of trying to undermine the Police Force,’’ Sen. Gill said.
Prior to his appointment as Ambassador, Mr. MacLeish held a contractual appointment as Counsellor in the Grenada Embassy in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital. No residence is provided to a Counsellor but the person receives a housing allowance of EC$35,863.08.
“However, as Ambassador, Mr. MacLeish is not paid a housing allowance,’’ the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said categorically. “The Government of Grenada leases a building in Venezuela which is maintained by our Government as the Ambassador’s Residence.’’
As someone who ought to be an elderly statesman, said Sen. Gill, “Dr. Mitchell surely can do better with his time than engage in daily mischief and the spreading of information he knows is untrue.’’
shame on you Arley. You should have listened to the statement before you start braying. You and you party seem to be in the habit of saying things and checking for accuracy after the fact.
You need to correct this misinformation you uttered.

Did Senator Gill listen to the Opposition Leader clearly? He said “if the Venezuelan Government is paying housing for the Ambassador and the Grenada Government is paying housing to the Ambassador then it constitutes to fraud”. The Opposition leader was quoting the figures from a Government document supplied to Parliament by the Ministry of Finance, so Senator Gill need to check his sources.
