St. George’s, September 12, 2011 – Several Grenadians are beginning work this week on a major infrastructural project in the country.
It’s the start of construction on the Greater Grenville Development Project. The contractor for the project is Quinn Limited, a Grenadian company.
“This is employment for the Grenadian people and it’s only a beginning. There are many more job-creation projects that will be starting over the next several months,’’ said Joseph Gilbert, Minister of Works, Physical Development and Public Utilities.
Hon. Gilbert was speaking last Friday in St. Andrew, where he and several other ministers – including Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas – had converged for a series of official activities relating to improving and enhancing the physical infrastructure in Grenville.
As part of Friday’s activities, the Prime Minister and his government team were involved in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the official handing over of temporary facilities for butchers and vendors, who now await the completion of a permanent site that will become available with the construction of the Grenville Market.
Ceremonies were also held to open a temporary vegetable market at the GCNA building on Seaton Browne Street, and for a meat market that is currently situated in the former fish market on Victoria Street.
The latest developments follow an event in June in which Prime Minister Thomas, Minister Gilbert and other government officials visited St. Andrew to initiative the start of work on a new abattoir in Mirabeau. The abattoir is being built by the local company, Classic Designs.
“I am delighted to be back in St. Andrew for another event in the unfolding and complete implementing of the Greater Grenville Project,’’ Minister Gilbert said Friday.
“Today, we are again assembled for another sod-turning; this one for the broader Grenville Development Project. And, once more, we are proud to announce that another Grenadian company, Quinn Limited, has been awarded the contract for this component of the project.’’
Mr. Gilbert commended the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), which is funding the Greater Grenville Project.
“I want to thank the CDB for their cooperation and understanding when government – through the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Finance – approached them on revising the bidding criteria to allow more local contractors an opportunity to undertake and manage projects throughout Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique,’’ he said.
“Our engagement has been successful and hence, today, we have Classic Design and Quinn Company as leading contractors on the Grenville Project.’’
Mr. Gilbert said the project manager and technical team at the Ministry of Works had spent “night and day, doing all they can, to make sure that the project is properly designed and that all requirements meet the highest international standards.’’
Government, he promised, “will remain steadfast in its quest to enhance the socio-economic conditions of all our people; from coast to coast; from parish to parish; and in town and country.’’
