OFFICIAL OUTLINES PROJECTS TO BENEFIT FROM $5.25 M FUNDING

ST. GEORGE’S, THURSDAY, JANUARY27, 2011 – Officials of the Community Division of the Ministry of Housing and Lands are delighted with the money allocated for projects in 2011.

Finance Minister, Hon. Nazim Burke, has announced that EC$5.25 million has been budgeted this year for projects of the Community Development Division. The money almost doubles last year’s when government provided EC$2.7 million.

Coordinator of the Community Development Division, Raye Goddard, is happy for the additional project funding.

“The Division is now planning, estimating and verifying projects that will be started and completed this year,’’ she said. “With this increase in the budget we have to ensure that projects are completed in terms of priority.”

Some projects earmarked for completion this year include the Darbeau By-Road; Limes By-Road; H.A. Blaize Street Step and Railing; Sans Souci Walkway; Mt. Airy Community Centre; Lauriston, Belmont and Top Hill bus stops in Carriacou; a Gazebo in Lauriston; and the Petite Martinique Hard Court.

Goddard said technical difficulties will prevent completion of the Non-Pariel By-Road this year.

“The Non-Pariel inner road has a lot of technical challenges. It is a three-year project and at this time the division is not in a position to complete it,” Goddard said.

Additionally, the Community Development Division in Carriacou and Petite Martinique will host training programmes in plumbing and small-engine repair.

The small-engine repair training will be financed by the Basic Needs Trust Fund.
