New T&T PM congratulated on “history-making victory’’

The National Democratic Congress congratulates the United National Congress, the Congress of the People and the other parties that formed the “People’s Partnership,’’ on their victory in the May 24th general election in Trinidad and Tobago.

The conduct of the election and the smooth transition of power reinforce Trinidad’s status as a leader in the democratic tradition in the region and the world. All parties, all winners and losers, must be commended for the courageous campaign that was undertaken in the quest to be of service to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

“Our Party Leader and Prime Minister, Hon. Tillman Thomas, and the Executive and members of the NDC, salute Mrs. Kamla Persad-Bissessar on her history-making victory, becoming the first female Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago,’’ said Peter David, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress. “The first by Mrs. Persad-Bissessar reminds us in Grenada of when Dame Hilda Bynoe was made Governor of Grenada, the first woman to hold such a position in the English-speaking Caribbean.’’

The NDC looks forward to maintaining and strengthening the political party, governmental and people-to-people relations that have been the hallmark of the historical, social and economic ties between Grenada and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar is a 58-year-old lawyer and former University of the West Indies lecturer.
