St. George’s, July 2, 2011 – Spicemas 2011 has crowned its first official winner of this year’s carnival celebrations.
Coyaba New Dimensions, by a mere half point, edged out Republic Bank Angel Harps to win Friday’s Bomb Tune Competition organised by the Grenada Steelbands’ Association (GSA) and the Grenada Carnival Committee (GCC). Angel Harps were the defending champions.
“Let me be the first to congratulate Dimensions, Harps and Pan Wizards – three bands from my constituency – on taking the top spots in the competition,’’ said MP for Town of St. George, Peter David. “I also want to commend all the participating bands for their spirited performances and for an enjoyable evening of steelband music.’’
Mr. David also used the opportunity to reiterate his commitment to assisting with the upgrading of the panhouses of the three orchestras in his constituency.
“This is a commitment I’ve made and I intend to keep,’’ he said. “The project assistance for Harps, Dimensions and Pan Wizards should be forthcoming very shortly.’’
Steelbands still have a chance of winning a second component of a three-part competition of the GSA and GCC, the Panyard Judging.
The third, and most coveted aspect, is the National Panorama Championship that will be held Saturday, August 6.
The Bomb Tune Competition, held at the Tanteen Netball Court, attracted eight bands: Rainbow City All Stars of St. Andrew; St. John-based Pan Ossia, Grand Roy Pan Angels and Digicel Florida All Stars; and LIME Commancheroes, Suzuki Pan Wizards, Angel Harps and New Dimensions of St. George’s.
Each orchestra performed a brief unarranged version of the selection it will be playing in next month’s panorama competition at the National Stadium.
Under the Bomb Tune rules, the bands were allowed to play any song other than a calypso.
New Dimensions’ “Rock the Boat’’ garnered 268 points to gain the judges’ nod.
Angel Harps, which played Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,’’ was second with 267.5 points.
“Just the Way You Are,’’ a Bruno Mars original, was played by Pan Wizards which amassed 257 for third position. Commancheroes were fourth and Rainbow City All Stars placed fifth.
