St. George’s, October 26, 2009 – The political leader of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reiterated his commitment to upholding the democratic process in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Hon. Tillman Thomas, who is also Prime Minister, says diligent efforts must be made to protect democracy.

“We must be zealous in maintaining and protecting our democracy,’’ Mr. Thomas said in brief remarks at an NDC fundraising dinner October 24 at the Grenada Grand Beach Resort.  The $100-a-plate dinner was attended by members, supporters and friends of the NDC, including businessmen and representatives from several regional countries.

Tourism Minister Hon. Glynis Roberts, NDC Treasurer and MP for St. George South, was pleased with what she described as a “good turnout’’ for the party’s 5th annual fundraising dinner.

Prime Minister Thomas, the NDC’s Member of Parliament for St. Patrick East, noted that political parties are not “income-generating’’ institutions. Fundraising events like the NDC’s dinner are a “very important’’ means in the attempts at sustaining political organizations like the National Democratic Congress, he said.

“I welcome this very important fundraising event and I thank all of you for attending,’’ the NDC Leader and Prime Minister said. “I am looking forward to us working together to strengthen our democratic institutions.  We have a responsibility to maintain them.’’
