St. George’s, November 4, 2011 – Anthony “Jericho’’ Greenidge was at the heart of the community where he lived and has left a legacy of community and professional success, a senior government minister has said.
Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Peter David, who is also MP for the Town of St. George, joined in the public expression of grief at the death of Greenidge, whom he described as a “dear friend’’ who loved his community and country.
“Jericho, as a huge radio personality, belonged to the nation; but he also never lost touch with his immediate community in Four Roads,’’ said Mr. David, who is also Minister of Culture. “When anything was to be done in Four Roads – whether sporting or cultural – I know I could call on Jericho to assist. He was a dedicated and conscientious person, a hard worker and a dear friend of the nation and the Town of St. George.’’
MP David, who visited Greenidge’s sister Thursday evening to personally convey his sympathies, recalled his last conversation with the late WEE FM announcer who was also known as “De Duke.’’
“That conversation was about two months ago when Jericho was invited to be a representative of the Town of St. George on a delegation I was leading on a visit to China,’’ said Mr. David.
“Everything was arranged but he withdrew from the trip hours before we left because he said he wasn’t feeling well,’’ the MP disclosed. “But he was in good spirits and we had promised to reconnect on my return. However, by the time I returned from China, he had left for medical treatment in the United States.’’
Greenidge, a former national track and field athlete, and a graduate of the Grenada Boys Secondary School, died Thursday morning in New York.
A vice-president of the Media Workers Association of Grenada, Greenidge was also a popular calypsonian, calypso commentator and critic, Master of Ceremony and parang singer.
“His death is sad and heart wrenching. We all grieve for Jericho and sympathize with his family and friends,’’ said Minister David. “But Jericho has left a legacy in media and culture that we ought to recognize, cherish and embrace.’’
