National Celebrations Committee reveals plans 2015 Independence Celebrations

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, January 8, 2015 – GIS: Almost one month away from Grenada’s anticipated 41st Independence Anniversary, the National Celebrations Committee (NCC), on Tuesday, hosted a media launch to formally begin the countdown to the grand patriotic event.

The NCC revealed that this year’s celebrations will be observed under the theme “Moving Forward in Unity to Build a Stronger Nation”, which Minister for Culture and Heritage, Senator the Hon. Brenda Hood says is in keeping with the plans of Government and the nation as a whole.

“The whole idea of unity is key for all of us as we build our nation, because nothing can be built if you don’t have unity,” the Culture Minister said.

According to the Celebrations Committee, this year’s Independence activities will be hosted over a three month period – from February to April –  in which activities are expected to be carried out throughout the length and breadth of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The line-up of activities include aspects of sports, culture, religion, village competitions and school treats, with the highlight being the traditional Independence Day Military Parade on February 7 at the National Stadium.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Jesmon Prince said the Royal Grenada Police Force is looking forward to the parade to showcase its talents, as this year the force will display the trooping of the police band and the trooping of the colours of the Grenadian flag.

Chairperson of the NCC, Dr. Julie DuBois is urging all Grenadians to participate in as many of the activities as possible and use the festive opportunity to bond with family and friends in a patriotic way.

In the same note Minister Hood hinted that it is not too early to begin displaying the national colours. She said she would like citizens to begin decorating their businesses and facilities from now.

“I don’t want us to wait to until the week before Independence to do this. I want us to start now.”

Plans for the Sister Isles include Independence rallies on February 4 and 5 for Petite Martinique and Carriacou respectively.
